   <subfield code="a">An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of different dietary protein and chitin levels on growth, nutrient utilization, body composition, digestibility and digestive enzyme activity of Penaeus vannamei juveniles. Six diets were formulated to contain two protein levels (27 ans 32% crude protein and three chitin levels (0, 0.5 and 1 % chitin). P. vannamei juveniles with initial average body weight of 0.2 g were randomly distributed to 24 tanks and fed with the test diets 3x a day. Results showed that dietary protein, lipid, and their interaction had a significant effect (P&lt;0.05) on weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR). The weight gain and SGR increased as dietary protein and chitin inclusion increased. Shrimps fed with diets containing 27% crude protein and 0.5 and 1% chitin exhibited a gain in weight not significantly different from these fed with 32% crude protein unsupplemented with chitin. Protein and lipid retention significantly increased with increasing dietary protein and chitin ; whereas  feed conversion ration followed a similar pattern to that of the weight gain. Dietary protein, lipid and their interaction has also significantly enhanced the total body protein content of the shrimp juveniles. However, apparent dry matter digestibility of the diets was not affected by dietary chitin levels. Interaction of protein and chitin was also observed in the protease and amylase activity, with increasing dietary chitin inclusion promoting increased activity of the enzymes, Dietary chitin enhanced the growth, nutrient  utilization and digestive enzyme activity of juvenile Penaeus vannamei. Results indicate that dietary chitin at 0.5 and 1% inclusion had a protein sparing effect, and can reduce dietary protein inclusion without significantly affecting the growth performance of the shrimp juvenlles.</subfield>
