<subfield code="a">Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an infection that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the white blood cells called CD4 cells. The virus destroys these CD4 cells, weakening a person’s immunity against opportunistic infections, such as tuberculosis and fungal infections, severe bacterial infections and some cancers. (Key Facts: HIV, 2022).

Despite advancements in treatment and prevention, HIV remains a significant global public health challenge. The latest data from 2021 indicates a 68% decrease in HIV-related deaths since its peak in 2004, yet the virus has claimed the lives of over 40 million individuals worldwide. In 2021 alone, approximately 650,000 people succumbed to HIV-related causes globally (Key Facts: HIV, 2022). In the Philippines, in July 2022, there were 1,346 confirmed HIV-positive individuals and were accounted to the total 103,112 reported cases since January 1984. 30% of individuals reported in July had advanced HIV infection (217 based on immunologic criterion, additional 182 based on clinical criteria) at the time of testing (Department of Health Epidemiology Bureau HIV/AIDS and ART Registry of the Philippines, 2022).

Understanding the symptoms and progression of HIV is crucial for healthcare professionals involved in patient care. Symptoms of HIV disease can appear at any time during the course of HIV infection. The more severe and life-threatening complications of HIV infection occur in patients with CD4+ T-cell counts <200/ uL. AIDS is diagnosed to any individual with HIV infection and a CD4+ T-cell count of <200/uL and in anyone with HIV infection who develops any of the HIV-associated diseases considered to be indicative of a severe defect in cell-mediated immunity (Loscalzo, J., et al, 2022).

In East Avenue Medical Center, an average of around 8-10 cases in a month are being admitted for infections usually seen in immunocompromised hosts without HIV testing. The doctors and other allied health professionals that manage these patients usually refer to the HIV/AIDS Core Team for HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT). As a member of the team that cares for the patient, it is also his responsibility to communicate and explain the various diagnostic procedures that will be conducted on the patient.

In 2007, the WHO made recommendations to introduce provider-initiated counselling and testing (PICT) as an effective public health intervention to increase access to HIV counselling and testing (HCT) and reduce missed opportunities for testing. PICT enables medical practitioners to treat their clients appropriately by identifying those who need treatment and/or wellness programmes early. This helps health care providers to improve the quality of medical care rendered to their clients and reduce morbidity and mortality. (Makhunga-Ramfolo, N., et al, 2011).

The counsellor should be able to provide basic information to clients on HIV and the counseling process. Education can be provided to an individual verbally and can be supported by other material, e.g. pamphlets and audiovisual tools. The medical practitioner should be, in a pre test counselling, be guided by the client’s knowledge, needs or requests. He should be able to assess the client’s understanding of information provided and reinforcing messages and concepts, his readiness for testing and possible results and in the case of refusal, ascertain the reasons and respond to incorrect beliefs.

Educational strategies play a vital role in equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills for effective counselling and testing. Interactive workshops offer a platform for learning and skill development which includes communication, critical-thinking, and decisionmaking abilities. Utilizing diverse teaching methods, such as reading materials, coaching, and demonstrations, enhances understanding and skill acquisition. Moreover, tailored activities accommodate different learning styles, promoting active participation and engagement, thus enhancing learning outcomes. Equipping the healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct provider-initiated counselling and testing tailored to their patients' needs is an indicator to the success of the workshop. Empowering healthcare professionals to deliver counselling confidently while upholding ethical standards is paramount to improving overall patient care.</subfield>
