<subfield code="a">The purpose of this exploratory study is to determine the reasons of students enrolled in health sciences courses to continue their smoking habit. Sample size was initially set at ten (10) students, however, one participant backed out, leaving the total number of participants to nine (9). Semi-structured individual in-depth interviews were conducted using a list of guide questions. Content analysis using an iterative approach was used to code and analyze the data. Two major themes were identified for smoking initiation: influence from others (peers, family, and partner) and inherent feelings (instinct, depression and curiosity). Three main themes were distinguished for the reasons for continuation of smoking habit: social (peer influence, way of forming new friendships, family bonding and association with alcohol consumption during get togethers), psychological (stress relief and calming effect — as a venue for releasing heightened negative emotions i.e. anger, tension, loneliness, intoxicating effect of alcohol drinking, boredom, time for self and oral fixation), and physical reasons (feeling of light-headedness and cooling effect of menthol). Primary knowledge on the effects of smoking to health were learned from class lectures, publications/research studies, media and vicarious report of one who had already experienced harmful effects of smoking. The sufficiency of their knowledge on smoking which they obtained from school lectures and other sources, however, was not measured. There were seven identified factors that point to promotion of continuing the smoking habit, namely, withdrawal symptoms, loss of concentration, lack of motivation, easy availability and accessibility of cigarettes, no felt urgency, temptation is too strong, perceived sense of self control. Five factors, on the other hand, were found to influence the participants’ plans to quit smoking: perception of themselves as a supposed health role model, social stigma, feeling of guilt over smoking, lingering smell of cigarettes and experience of harmful effects (i.e. feeling and looking old). Several measures were verbalized by the participants to quit smoking in the future: distancing self from smoking buddies, significance of family support, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and Physical activity, alternative use of electronic smoking to replace tobacco Smoking, and scaring self with possible harmful consequences of smoking through research and rehabilitation. When asked, majority expressed unwillingness to participate in advocacy campaigns due to nonreadiness for immediate participation, a feeling of being a hypocrite (especially for someone who continues to smoke at present), disbelief in advocacy campaigns and belief that Smoking is a cultural phenomenon. The remaining participants who were willing enumerated the following concrete measures: acting as a witness to overcoming the urge of smoking, verbally discouraging them from pursuing and continuing smoking, and disseminating information obtained from research. Knowing these reasons can help others understand why these students choose to continue their smoking habit.</subfield>
