It hopes to put in perspective not only a decade of artistic activity but also the significance of that activity in the development of art in the country and in the cultural life of the people. Like the work of art itself, art critics and the mass media have become an indispensable part of the cultural environment necessary for the artist's survival. The artist, as well as the public to whom the work is addressed, are both quite aware of this curious development. They have accepted gracefully, although at times with hostility, the role that the critics and the press play in creating this climate--which can be breezy, turbulent or invigorating. Viewing the sixties from the perspective of a couple of years may have its disadvantages. We see a whole process of growth within a narrow period of time and in close range, a close-up, so to speak: events of little consequence tend to be enlarged, minor details blown out of proportion at the expense of significant ones, emphasis is given on an exclusive segment extracted from the continuum of a historical and complex process. Yet, events viewed from such close range are something quite exciting, vibrant, with a sense of cogency because they are very much part of the present in which we are also participant.
