<subfield code="a">In the year 2000, cancer was ranked as one of the leading causes of child mortality in the Philippines with leukemia being the most prevalent. Although cancer therapies have improved over the past years, studies have shown that children diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment are at risk for developing psychological difficulties especially in emotional well-being and social adjustment with peers. Thus, the degree of perceived social support that pediatric cancer patients possess during treatment may be essential in determining how well they cope with their situation.
This research aimed to describe the perceived social support of pediatric patients with leukemia in a tertiary hospital in Metro Manila with regards to undergoing chemotherapy. The study utilized a descriptive correlational design in determining the relationship between perceived social support (independent variable) and self-esteem, anxiety level and coping (dependent variables) among the research sample. Likewise, the study compared the dependent variables between subjects who perceive high and low social support. Participants were pediatric leukemia patients admitted for inpatient chemotherapeutic treatment. After the tool was administered, the data was collated and analyzed using the statistical tests Spearman's rho and independent t-tests.
Results showed a significant relationship between perceived social support and self-esteem; participants with high perceived social support have significantly higher levels of coping and self-esteem than those with low levels of perceived social support. An analysis of the participants’ and their parents’ verbalizations showed that positive parental attitude with regards to the hospitalization of their children as well as their physical presence during treatment were common among participants with higher levels of self-esteem and coping as opposed to those who have lower levels of self-esteem and coping. The findings showed that the care of school-aged leukemia patients while admitted for chemotherapy should include strengthening of their social support system with focus on implementation of interventions for improving self-esteem and coping and lowering anxiety directed towards treatment and fostering better parent-child interactions. With regards to the study, its replication with a larger sample size to increase the validity of the results is recommended.</subfield>
