<subfield code="a">INTRODUCTION: Health disparities are still present in the disabled population due
to many barriers despite the passage of public health policies that safeguard their
access to services. Despite the progress reported in the foreign literature and
health policies that aims to improve the access of the deaf population to oral health
care, there is little information regarding the experience of deafs during their dental
visit in the Philippine context.</subfield>
 </datafield>
 <datafield tag="520" ind1="0" ind2=" ">
 <subfield code="a">OBJECTIVE: To determine the communication barriers experienced during dental
treatment by High School students in Philippine School for the Deaf (PSD).</subfield>
 </datafield>
 <datafield tag="520" ind1="0" ind2=" ">
 <subfield code="a">METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was done on high school students in
PSD. A key informant interview was done with the Persons with Disabilities (PWD)
Committee of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) to gain information about
the prevalence of dentists adept at Filipino Sign Language (FSL) and special
management procedures for treating deaf patients in the Philippines. Measures of
frequency and percentages were used to analyze the data collected through the
survey, and the key informant interview was recorded and transcribed for in-depth
analysis.</subfield>
 </datafield>
 <datafield tag="520" ind1="0" ind2=" ">
 <subfield code="a">RESULTS: The most preferred types of communication of the respondents (N=63)
were FSL (40%) and natural sign or gestural sign (32%). About 32% of the
respondents have never been to a dentist. For the respondents who have access
to oral health care (n=43), 15% have at least one negative response about their
perceptions of their current dentist, and 56% have at least one negative response
about their communication self-efficacy. According to the PWD Committee of PDA,
there are no data about the prevalence of dentists adept at Filipino Sign Language.</subfield>
 </datafield>
 <datafield tag="520" ind1="0" ind2=" ">
 <subfield code="a">CONCLUSION: Communication barriers are experienced by deaf high school
students from the Philippine School for the Deaf during dental visits. These include
the lack of knowledge or non-use of FSL by dental professionals, lack of FSL
interpreters, and inadequate training and awareness of dentists during their dental
visits.</subfield>
