Summary:Trail of Lone Firepecker is a narrative of how I am recovering from social isolation brought by the impact of covid-19 pandemic. The story is rooted in the concept of hikkimori, a social withdrawal phenomenon that started in Japan, where people isolate themselves for at least six months and refuse to participate in society. We were forced to live this experience in months of lockdown, but it eventually became an active choice for me to deny contact from others. However, as restrictions were slowly lifted, I realized my decision took a toll on my mental health, and I wanted to improve myself. This thesis employed the Narrative Identity theory to establish the use of a fictional character I created years ago, the firepecker, as my persona in recovery. I undergo narrative identity reconstruction as the firepecker by going on a journey across my reimagined memories, visualize my ideal self, and use my past and future as a blueprint for growth in the present. Meaning Managment Theory also helped me give new meaning to the firepecker, from a symbol of my avoidant behavior, to a character that gives itself hope. To depict this story, this thesis comes in the form of fourteen acrylic and oil paintings. Three large paintings that measure three by four feet follow the Three Act Narrative structure, which establishes the setup, confrontation, and resolution. The arrangement of the eleven smaller paintings around the large works is inspired by comics, where individual panels are more episodic but significantly expand the narrative. In the painting process, I followed two non-consecutive steps that were meditative. First, I externalize my feelings of loneliness and shame by coating my canvases in black gesso. Lastly, I practice mindfulness by painting lines throughout the composition. These actions reflected my approaches to recovery, which is to communicate more openly and become more present in the moment.
