   <subfield code="a">Objective. The correlation between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus has been &#13;
extensively investigated. However, there is little evidence supporting this association in a &#13;
Filipino population. This study aimed to determine the association between periodontitis &#13;
and diabetes among Filipino patients at the Oral Medicine Section of the University of the &#13;
Philippines College of Dentistry within academic years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">Methodology. A retrospective case-control study design was used in this research. Dental &#13;
records of all patients examined for periodontal diagnosis in the university within two &#13;
academic years were reviewed. The prevalence of diabetes among periodontitis patients &#13;
(cases) and among patients without periodontitis (controls) were compared. Odds ratio &#13;
analysis was done to determine the association between periodontitis and diabetes. A &#13;
logistic regression model was used to adjust for age, sex, educational attainment, and &#13;
smoking status.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">Results. A total of 715 cases and 834 controls were analyzed. Most cases were 41-50 years &#13;
old (26.43%), while most controls were aged 21-30 (51.56%). Females outnumbered males &#13;
in both groups (p= 0.188). Majority of the patients from both groups reached college level. &#13;
More smokers were observed among cases compared to controls (p= 0.001). The overall &#13;
prevalence of diabetes mellitus for all patients was 3.10%. Diabetes prevalence among &#13;
cases (5.73%) was significantly higher compared to controls (0.84%) (p&lt; 0.001). The &#13;
initial odds ratio computed was 7.19. However, after a logistic regression analysis, the &#13;
x&#13;
adjusted OR was 3.05. Only 161 periodontitis cases had sufficient data for assigning a &#13;
disease severity. None of the patients with mild and moderate periodontitis had diabetes, &#13;
while 9.87% of severe periodontitis patients had diabetes. However, there was not enough &#13;
data to correlate periodontitis severity with the presence of diabetes. </subfield>

   <subfield code="a">Conclusions. In this study, periodontitis was associated with diabetes in this representative &#13;
sample of the Filipino population. Diabetic patients were approximately three times more &#13;
likely to develop periodontitis than nondiabetic individuals. </subfield>
