The study investigates the development of sexting engagement in the setting of distant relationships during the pandemic, as well as the motivations and benefits of continued sexting involvement. Previous studies on sexting, and very few studies focused on the motivations and positive outcomes it may contribute to relationships. The current study applied the Social Exchange Theory to examine how individuals comprehend why they engage in sexting activities, recognize the benefits and drawbacks of the activity, and investigate why they continue to participate in it. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 3 male and 3 female participants, and the data was analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The researchers discovered that sexting between long-distance couples during the lockdown started with curiosity, exploration, and experimentation. Additionally, the researchers also discovered that there are prerequisites that need to be present to engage in sexting, such as continued communication, distance, and most importantly, consent. It was also found that there would be a phase of nornalization and attribution, it is within the initial assessment of the individuals involved on the costs and benefits of sexting whether they continue engaging in it or not. It was also discovered that different factors affect the frequency and continuity of sexting in the relationship, such as personal affect and mood, individual attitudes, different social influences, and individual situations.
