LA - English YR - 2017 UL - https://tuklas.up.edu.ph/Record/UP-1685675941123957808 AB - With the implementation of K-12 program in the Philippines, Filipino students are now ready for employment based from their specialization. However, this poses a challenge for students' decision whether 12 years of schooling could be beneficial or not. Given this context, the study investigates the costs and benefits of the K-12 implementation among the 63 and 73 students from Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home Business and Leyte National High School respectively. Specifically, the paper describes the socio-demographic profile, costs and benefits incurred and acquired and the implication of the program among the students. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire and a focus group discussion was also conducted. The costs incurred by the students include tuition fees, school-related fees, stress, pressure and opportunity costs. While, future income, saved societal costs of crime, saved environmental damage costs and civic participation were considered benefits for the students. Cost-benefit analysis was done to determine whether the program is beneficial to the students. Results show that the average benefit amounted to P1, 457, 664 per student while the costs incurred per student amounts to P7,910 on a single academic year. The students also reported that the facilities of the school, specifically for the senior high school is still underdeveloped and needs further improvement. Quality of teachers is also needed to be enhanced to suit the level of education that the government envisions for the program. The researchers recommend to utilize the budget allotted by the Department of Education to improve the facilities of schools implementing the K-12 program. Better school facilities will boost the effectiveness of teachers and productivity of the students. Moreover the quality of the teachers should be improved to have more comprehensive discussions in the classroom. And for further studies, the researchers recommend to increase the sample size and the number of schools focused in the study. Teachers and the school administration should also be taken into account in the study. NO - Undergraduate thesis (BASS Economics) -- University of the Philippines, Tacloban.
