<subfield code="a">This is a quantitative study that seeks to find out whether the gender of a preschooler, the type of story (stereotyped or nonstereotyped) he/she is exposed to, and the interaction of both factors, affect his/her stereotypes in regard to sex roles. To answer this, experiments were conducted in two Kinder-I classes of Palo Angelicum School in Palo, Leyte. The entire sample of forty (40) preschoolers consisted of an equal number of boys and girls whose mean age was 5.38 years. The morning class was randomly assigned as the experimental group; it had twenty (20) participants in all, with an equal number of males and females. This group heard the stereotyped version of the picture book entitled "An Magbugto na Winx ngan an Higante na Puno" (The Winx Siblings and the Giant Tree). On the other hand, the afternoon class, which had the same number and composition of pupils, was assigned as the control group. They heard the nonstereotyped version of the same story. The Sex-role Stereotypes Inventory for Preschoolers, a psychological test that measures the degree of stereotypical thinking in 4-6-year-old children, was administered to the participants after the storytelling activity. Their test scores were subjected to a 2x2 ANOVA with gender (male or female) and type of story heard (stereotyped or nonstereotyped) as the independent variables and the test scores as the dependent variable. Results showed that, contrary to expectations, neither the participants' gender, the type of story they heard, nor an interaction between the two, had a significant effect on their sex-role stereotypes. The findings are explained in terms of another factor (age) having overriden the effect of gender; this is because the participants are at a stage in their lives where development of stereotypes are at a peak. The nonsignificance of the type of story as a factor is discussed using the phenomenon of difficulty in recall or distortion of information when presented with counterstereotypic information. Moreover, the nonsignificant effect of the stories may be due to the fact that one storytelling activity is not enough to have an impact on children's stereotyped beliefs, which have been entrenched in their minds for several years.</subfield>
