<subfield code="a">Countless stories have been told about lovelorn men painstakingly searching long in history for the impeccable love potion. The discovery of the human pheromones seems to have provided them the solution. Numerous studies have been done on human pheromones, and results seem to lead towards one particular direction--pheromones, an effective sex-attractant.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">In the Philippines, included in our number of folkloric beliefs is the effect of love potions. In fact, there are different terms for it in the various ethnic groups of Filipinos. Yet despite its known effectiveness, there still are no satisfying explanations as to why. To at least alleviate most people's ignorance about this significant part of our culture, it was the researchers' objective to find out if Filipino love potions, lumay particularly, and very primitive as it may be, could be explained by the presence of certain pheromonic chemicals.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The study was conducted at Laoang Northern Samar, one of the researcher's home towns. Six barangays of Laoang were included, namely, Brgy. Bobolosan, Brgy. San MIguel Heights, Brgy. Guilaoangui, Brgy. Talisay, Brgy. Sto. Niño, and Brgy. Baybay. The respondents were chosen through the snowball technique, where after each interview, he/she would refer the researchers to someone who has significant knowledge on the topic.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The results showed that lumay basically depends on orasyon. Almost all of the respondents considered this, and several different elements, as part of the process of making lumay.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">The most common element used are parts of rare plants, thus, supporting some Filipino literature that the researchers have gathered. Other elements include cigarettes, water, and handkerchieves, among others. It was therefore concluded that lumay's relation to the scientific studied human pheromones has little significance. However, the idea that some Filipino love potions have something to do with pheromones should not be discarded.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">People have several insights on the use of lumay. Most people say it is one way of deceiving others, therefore it should not be accepted in society. In addition, some say that men who resort to love potions to attract the woman he "loves" is a result of mere incompetence, inferiority, and low self-esteem.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">It is highly recommended that further researchers be done on what the constitution and processes of other local love potions are, and see if the results gathered from this study are similar to that of other areas as well. Triangulation should also be considered in conducting further researches, which the present research failed to do due to lack of time and resources. If possible, it is also recommended that experimental studies be done to explain why rare plants such as tangis-tangis, tagulilong, tuncos, etc, are known to be an effective element for love potions.</subfield>
