   <subfield code="a">Potentially toxic and harmful phytoplankton can be classified as toxin-producer, high biomass producer, or both as exhibited in some species/genera. Water samples were collected from selected sites in San Pedro bay from November 2010 to January 2011. These were assessed for the presence of potentially toxic and harmful phytoplankton that were then identified to the lowest possible taxonomic classification. Cell densities of these phytoplankton were determined and expressed as cells/L. There were 9 dinoflagellates, 1 diatom, 1 cyanophyte, and 1 prymnesiophyte/haptophyte found and identified to be potentially toxic and/or harmful. Saxitoxin producers Alexandrium sp. and Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum were detected in station 2. This is the first recorded detection of Alexandrium sp. in the bay. Pseudo-nitzschia p., a diatom had the highest cell density among the phytoplankton observed in all three sampling stations for most of the sampling period at 5.7x10 raised to the power of 3 cells/L in station 3 during January. Highest cell density recorded for the dinoflagellates was Prorocentrum sp. at 590 cells/L in station 1 in the same month. Cell density for Pseudo-nitzschia sp. is lowest when dinoflagellates cell density is high suggesting diatom to dinoflagellate succession.</subfield>
