<subfield code="a">Herbivory effects of naturally found densities of the invasive golden apple snail(Pomacea canaliculata) on two in situ aquatic plants namely water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica), and the transplanted plant water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) were assessed and quantified in wetland in Palo, Leyte, Philippines from December 30, 2011 to February 29, 2012. Results of the plant preference assessment using "box-type" enclosures showed that the snail's grazing activity significantly reduced plant species' biomass up to 46%. When snails were simultaneously presented to the three plant species, it was observed that the snails mostly preferred the water lettuce, followed by the water hyacinth. After 28 days, water lettuce and water hyacinth biomass was reduced by 46% and 26%, respectively. On the other hand, water spinach was the least preferred by the snails gaining 10% more of its initial biomass after 28 days. The two plants--water lettuce and water hyacinth-- were then used to quantify herbivory impact of the snails using "bag-type" enclosures. After 21 days, change in the weights of the snails feeding on the transplanted water lettuce revealed an average gain of 6.27g, which is 1.98g higher compared to the average weight attained by those that fed on the in situ water hyacinth.</subfield>
