   <subfield code="a">Crude leaf extracts of Gliricidia sepium (jaeg.) Stead and Starchytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl. showed inhibitory effect on the growth of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. On the other hand, Lantana camara and Plumiera acutifolia Poir. showed inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and P. aeruginosa only. The filter paper disc-agar diffusion method was employed to screen for the anti- bacterial potential of the plants. Increased concentration of the crude leaf extracts of the five plants resulted in an increase in the diameter of the zone of growth inhibition in test organisms. The greatest inhibition of growth was noted at the highest (8,000) concentration of the extracts.</subfield>
