   <subfield code="a">Analysis of acidic fractions revealed that IAA was not present in significant quantities in pig slurry and was eliminated by all the treatment systems used. However indole compounds which could act as precursors of IAA were widely detected, and some e.g. indole 3-acetamide, indole-3acetonitrile and tryptamine resisted degradation. Skatole was very efficiently eliminated by aeration and to lesser extent by treatment with hydrogen peroxide , but it resisted degradation by anaerobic treatment. It is suggested that the indoles in pig slurry arise from the metabolism of tryptophan.</subfield>
