This study analyzed the effects of parental absence on the self-concept and social interaction of teenagers having OFW parents. The researchers used the concepts of the Looking-Glass Self by Charles Horton Cooley and the Social Exchange Theory by Burhus Frederic Skinner. Parental absence does not affect adolescent's self-concept in a negative way. The results showed that the three domains of the self discussed in the study were not negatively affected by the OFW phenomenon. These three domains are the emotional self, the academic self and the social self. These aspects are not threatened by the parental absence. Rather, the teenagers are positively motivated resulting in their personal growth and development. The significant others who are present in the lives of these teenagers are acknowledged in the study. These significant others contributed to the teenager's positive evaluation of their selves and their interaction to other people. They helped, guided, loved and motivated these teenagers thus giving them emotional and moral support. The social interactions of the teenagers were not affected by the situation they have. Rather it became a venue to widen their understanding and social engagement. Teenager's relationships with others including their parents were seen in terms of their invested efforts and their gained rewards.
