   <subfield code="a">Alcoholic liver disease among the leading cause of mortality (Janani and Surapaneni, 2010). This is aggravated by the continuous increase of the cost of hepatoprotective drugs in the market. Hence, natural remedies from planets are of great interest as possible protective agents to help the human body from alcoholic damage. The methanolic extract of the microalgae Spirulina platensis was screened for phytochemical constituents and investigated for its hepatoprotective. Dosage used were 20% and 40% S. platensis extract. The liver-protecting effects of S. platensis was evaluated in vitro and in vivo using various assays. The in vitro assays yielded significant results for hydroxyl and speroxide scavenging activity as well as for lipid peroxidation. The in vivo results also showed positive correlation with the findings from the in vitro assays. These dosage concentrations of S. Platensis protected the liver from alcohol induced liver damage. The effect of these two concentrations is similar statistically. Histopathological observations also supported the result from both assays. Pytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of some pharmacologically important compounds such as flavonoids that may contribute to the hepatoprotective action of this plant.
