   <subfield code="a">The massive invasion of Pomacea canaliculata (golden apple snail) all throughout the country is causing immense agricultural problems and serious threats to the natural environment, including the decreasing number of Pila (native snail). Reports are even saying that Pila is apparently declining. Despite these, we found a pond, serving as a habitat for Pila in Barangay Diarabasin, Dipaculao, Aurora which is not yet infested with Pomacea canaliculata. This study focused on characterizing the habitats of Pomacea and Pila to determine probable cause for the absence of Pomacea canaliculata in a pond inhabited by Pila. Two ponds were examined. One is inhabited only by Pila(pond A) and the other one only houses Pamacea canaliculata (pond B). We considered possible human intervention by conducting interviews to the residents in the two habitats. Some ecological parameters like water temperature, water pH and Dissolved Oxygen level were also determined. Based on the data gathered, the abiotic factors in the two ponds are with in the ranges of the habitat preferences of these two species. We therefore infer that the golden apple snails may not have been introduced in the area at all. If ever they were introduced, the existence of the previously reported predators of Pomacea canaliculata in pond A, which include fire ants(Solenopsis geminata), tilapia(Oreochromis sp.) and shrimp (Macrobrachium sp.) might have prevented them from displacing the Pila population -- Author's abstract.</subfield>
