<subfield code="a">The print media is one of the most effective tools in disseminating information to he people. As part of the media industry, it is known for its credibility and objectivity. However, there arises the issue of sensationalism being applied to news articles, and thus becoming a crisis to the media because this practice goes beyond the ethical standards. Sensationalism is a matter of exaggerating the news in order to increase audience interest. This usually occurs in some crime stories such as murders and sexual assaults. Because of this, we have conducted a survey on how UP Baguio junior and senior students perceived the news articles of the Subic Bay rape case as sensational or not. We aimed to know their views with regard to sensationalism and how they see the way media covered the case in terms of objectivity and credibility. We used the agenda-setting theory in this study to know the power of media presenting news and issues to the readers and how it shapes the students' points of view about the case. As conclusion, sensationalism was proven to be present in the news articles in the Subic Bay rape case as answered by the respondents. Newspapers compete for good story so the readers will patronize them. This makes reporters and editors write news creatively by using suggestive headlines, blown-up photos and redundancy of reports to appeal to the readers. In order to prolong the life of a newspaper industry, they also tend to dramatize stories because it is one way to appeal to the readers. We recommend that reporters should be objective in writing news stories to maintain their credibility. The newspaper industry should not just think of economic purpose but should also be aware that its very duty is to serve the public. That is by giving people accurate and unbiased reports and without exaggeration -- Author's abstract.</subfield>
