   <subfield code="a">INTRODUCTION: A study on Carmona retusa, commonly known as Wild Tea or  Tsaang gubat, has demonstrated an anticariogenic effect due to its fluoride content. Part  of the normal flora in the human oral cavity, Streptococcus mutans is known to play a  major role in the etiology of dental caries. In this study, crude extract of dried Carmona  retusa leaves was evaluated for its antimicrobial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans,  in vitro.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">METHODS: Crude extract concentrations (25%, 50%, and 100%) were prepared from  dried and powdered Carmona retusa leaves with water as the solvent. The antimicrobial  efficacy of the prepared concentrations was tested using the agar disk diffusion method.  The zone of inhibitions produced by the Carmona retusa crude extract of different  concentrations were determined after 24 hours of incubation at 35°C. These were  measured using a 6-inch ruler and compared to the positive control (0.12% Chlorhexidine  digluconate) and the negative control (sterile distilled water).</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">RESULTS: The mean zones of inhibition produced by 0.12% chlorhexidine was 24.23  mm while the negative control and various concentrations of the Carmona retusa crude  extract did not inhibit bacterial growth?0mm mean diameter of zones of inhibition.</subfield>
