<subfield code="a">Introduction: The 2006 National Oral Health Survey (NOHS) revealed that 97.1% of six-year-old school children and 78.4% of twelve-year-old school children are suffering from dental caries. Around 85% and 56% show symptoms of odontogenic infections, respectively. While caries and the resulting oral infections have a minimal chance of becoming life-threatening, literature suggests that it has a detrimental effect to the general health, quality of life and academic performance of children. Jackson et al. (2011) concluded that dental pain and infections not only caused children to miss classes but also hindered them from performing well at school and even studying at home. This was supported by a study by Faust et al. (2012) where it was found that students suffering from dental pain are four times more likely to have a lower grade point average. In the Philippine setting, one of the major causes of school absenteeism is toothache. (Araojo, 2003) Given the substantial amount of data that there is an association between academic performance and oral health, the Philippines is confronted by the reality that in the 2010-2011 Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum, in terms of education, the Philippines ranked 8th among its nine South East Asian peers. In terms of primary education, the Philippines ranked 99th out of the total 138 countries surveyed.</subfield>

<subfield code="a">Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in Pasay City. The eight Pasay public school dentists and 19 Pasay public elementary schools were invited to participate. Before commencing data collection, the researchers secured the approval of the DepEd Pasay City Superintendent.</subfield>

<subfield code="a">Results and Discussion: Seventeen of the 19 schools agreed to participate while six of the eight dentists participated in the FGD. Only one school qualified for Phase 2, which declined further participation. Therefore, no data is available for Phase 2 data collection.</subfield>
