<subfield code="a">INTRODUCTION: Individual with intellectual disability (IID) are inflicted with difficulties such as seizures,poor motor coordination, poor muscular control, decreased defensive reflexes and other self-injurious behavior. This is why Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are the most commonly occuring incidence of trauma to individuals with intellectual disability (Glendor 2008). These individuals are dependent of the care they receive from others. The term "caregiver" stands for the people who give care and/or look after them. These people include parents, relatives, teacher/s, and/or nannies that as the term suggests, cater to the welfare of these individuals. This study is an attempt to determine the knowledge of caregivers of individuals with intellectual disability regarding traumatic dental injuries in three special education schools in Metro Manila.</subfield>

<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">METHODS: Sixty-one caregivers of individuals with intellectual disabilities from Candent Learning Haus, La Sagesse Rehabilitation and Development Center, and Kidsworld Integrated School were asked to answer a questionnaire that assess their knowledge on the identification of traumatic dental injuries and the proper emergency management for them. This questionnaire was given to the available caregivers in each school upon conducting the study. Results from these questionnaires were tabulated using Microsoft Excel.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">RESULTS: The first part of the questionnaire is on the identification of Traumatic Dental Injuries. Out of the 61 participants, only 4 (6.56%) were able to identify all of the TDIs. Only Extrusion, enamel-Dentin Crown Fracture with Pulp Exposure, and Intrusion were identified by a little more than 50% of the participants. The second part of the questionnaire is on the knowledge of the participants on the emergency management of TDIs. The most answered option for each TDI was "visit the dentist right away". However, the result for handling of the fracture tooth structure was different. The number of participants who answered the correct answer was the the same as those who answered the tooth was not important to store. For the handling of the avulsed tooth, none answered the correct answer "keep in mouth" and majority answered the tooth was not important to store. Furthermore, majority of the participants thought the tooth should be scrubbled with a toothbrush instead of gently rinsing it under running water. When asked about their education on TDIs, majority of the participants feel the need for a comprehensive education regarding TDIs.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">CONCLUSION: This study on the knowledge of the caregivers of individuals with intellectual disability on the emergency management of traumatic dental injuries showed that although lacking in knowledge on the identification of TDIs and in handling of fractured or avulsed tooth, a majority of the caregivers know what to do upon the occurrence of TDIs in terms of seeking treatment from a dentist. Overall, the participants feel that they are not well informed on TDIs.</subfield>
