<subfield code="a">INTRODUCTION: The researchers aimed to compare the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of fourth year high school (Grade 10) students from public and private schools in Quezon City. Other factors affecting KAP of students such as socioeconomic factors, oral health education in school, and environmental factors were also included in the study.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">MATERIALS & METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study design was used. Three schools were preselected by the Department of Education for the study. There were a total of 91 student participants in the study. Multistage clustered sampling w3as done to survey the students. Three data collection tools were used: (1) questionnaire for the Grade 10 students, (2) interview guide for the school dentist or health teachers, and (3) checklist for the school facilities. Correlation analysis was done using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">RESULTS: Knowledge and practices in oral health was significantly different statistically. Model school students had the most knowledge followed by private then public school students. Private school students had the best oral health practices followed by model school then public school students.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">Comparing the private and public schools KAP, there was not enough statistical evidence (p-value 0.070>0.05) to state a difference in knowledge and attitude between private school and public school. For practices, private school students have better oral health practices (p-value 0.024<0.05) than public school students.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">Socioeconomic status did not affect a student?s KAP. Presence of oral health education sessions in school is a factor on the knowledge on oral health but it does not translate to a high level of attitude and practices. Despite the availability of school dentist and wash facilities, majority of the students from model, private and public school did not brush their teeth in school.</subfield>
</datafield>
<datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" ">
<subfield code="a">CONCLUSION: Knowledge and practices in oral health are significantly different in the three schools in the study. Presence of oral health education and oral health related programs affects level of knowledge, but high level of knowledge does not translate to good attitudes or practices. Socioeconomic status of the student does not affect oral health KAP. Availability of facilities for oral hygiene does not affect the student?s KAP.</subfield>
