   <subfield code="a">This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the use of Chinese herbal medicine to control the side-effects of chemotherapy among patients with thyroid cancer patients managed in four hospitals in Bao Tou City, Mongolia in a prospective cohort study. Thirty female patients were included in the final sample.Patients were alternately assigned to intervention and control groups after they were referred to the study by the four oncology centers: ErJi, YiFi, and ErFu Hospitals in Bao Tou City, Mongolia. All patients received chemotherapy (2 to 3-drug regimens of either 50-fluouracil, cyclophosphamide, mitoxantron, doxorubicin and/or methotrexate) and anti-emetic drugs (either metoclopramide, ondansetron, or tropisetron). The intervention group received Chinese herbal medicine in addition to all the medication given to the subjects in the control group.</subfield>

   <subfield code="a">Questionnaires were used to assess the intensity of nausea and degree of anxiety felt by each study participant. Clinical parameters such as pulse rate, respiration rate, systolic blood pressure and white blood cell count were obtained prior to each chemotherapy infusion. All patients were then re-evaluated one week after the chemotherapy was administered.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Results exhibited highly significant differences between the two groups on nausea and anxiety, and nearly significant differences on pulse rate and respiratory rate. Both groups were not significantly different on systolic blood pressure and white blood cell count measures. Further analysis showed that herbal intervention had a significant impact on nausea and anxiety, and an almost significant impact on the respiratory rate.</subfield>
  </datafield>
  <datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" ">
   <subfield code="a">Therefore, it was shown that herbal therapy is effective in relieving signs and symptoms usually exhibited by anxious patients immediately prior to chemotherapy. The positive impact of this approach to physiological responses of patients provides very promising indications on the potential health enhancing effects of herbal therapy.</subfield>
