An in-vivo study of the effects of the location and quality of amalgam restorations on the gingival health status of experimental dogs Ma. Teressa A. The experiment was conducted on five male dogs, all falling within the age range of three months to a year. The male dogs were obtained two weeks prior to the onset of experiment and from thereon housed and fed together. At the onset of the experiment, each dog was anesthetized with Rompun and were handled in the following manner: two quadrants were considered -- a right experimental side and left a control side. On the control area, the teeth were not subjected to cavity preparation and fillings. They merely served as sources of control indices for the dog's normaloral state. Gingivectomy of the said teeth was done for histologic verification. On the experimental side, Indices, namely, Plaque Index, Pocket Depth & Gingival Index were taken prior to Class V cavity preparation and filling at the onset of investigation and Before Gingivectomy. Gingivectomy for histologic views of the changes in the gingiva was performed at seven days interval until all the five dogs were used. On every dogs, the following cavity preparation were done: a. On the third upper incisor, a subgingival cavity about 1-2 mm. below the gumline, intended to be filled without an overhang. b. On the upper canine, subgingival cavity preparation about 1 mm. below the gumline, intended to be filled with an overhang. c. On the lower canine, a supragingival cavity preparation in line with the gum border or 1 mm. above the line, intended to be filled without an overhang. d. On the first upper premolar, a supragingival cavity preparation about 1 mm. above the gumline, intended to be filled with an overhang. Our investigation seems to point to the same findings as other authors that amalgam restorations particularly if located anywhere near the gingival level and more so with defective margins are deleterious to the gingival health status. Clinical assessments showed changes in the gingiva as seen by an overall increase in pocket depth and plaque and typical signs of gingival alterations of color and bleeding tendencies.
