A dentifrice is a substance used with a toothbrush for the purpose of cleaning the accessible surface of the teeth to remove food particles for esthetic, cosmetic and hygienic purposes and to remove or help prevent the accumulation of films on the tooth surfaces which lead to tooth decay or calculus formation. In here, we are concerned with the abrasivity of commercial dentifrices in particular in the Philippines. The degree of abrasivity needed in detifrices vary with different people because of inherent differences in the oral flora and in the personal habits so that not one particular dentifrice paste currently available can meet all the requirements. A number of dentifrice paste were tested and it was found out that the most abrasive product tested was Sensodyne, followed by Crest Mint, Colgate MFP, Crest Regular and Close-up. Why one dentifrice was more abrasive than the other is a trade secret. Nevertheless, the dentist should choose a dentifrice that will relate to the individual patients' needs. Nacilla, Irene.
