<subfield code="a">The study was done to determine the factors contributing to the failure/delay of students in some selected dental courses. Grades of the students from School Year 1981-82 to School Year 1987-88 were obtained from the Records Section of the school and the top five pre-Clinical and Clinical courses were selected based on the ranking of the average proportions of students who obtained grades of 5.0/Incomplete for the past seven years. Questionnaires were distributed to all the students and to the faculty members of the selected courses to identify the factors that may contribute to the poor performances of the students. Biochemistry appeared to be the biggest problem of the students in the pre-Clinical courses indicated by the consistently low scores (below 3.0) obtained in all the factors. Identified problems in the pre-Clinical courses were those that were related to the courses like inherent difficulty of subjects, examination factors and students related factors like time management, interest and preparation. For the Clinical courses, identified problems were those relating to the patients, facilities, and the same student factors cited in the pre-Clinical courses. Although the same problems were identified the ranking of the factors differ for the faculty and the students. The students were and faculty differ in their opinion regarding the amount and the degree of difficulty of the Clinical requirements/.</subfield>
