<subfield code="a">31 midwives, 29 nurses, 40 doctors, 11 social workers, 51 teachers and 4 nutritionists working in public schools, City Health and Social Welfare services or private health units in Pasay City were randomly selected and interviewed about their knowledge and attitudes regarding breast feeding. 87 of the sample were females and all but 9 aged between 20 and 49 years, 60 had children. Most of the health workers, some social workers but few teachers had advised on breast feeding in the course of their duties. Although 70 of the females interviewed had breast fed their youngest child only 24 of these and continued to do so for 9 months or more. 22 had given their child 'cereal' before 3 months of age. These practices are more similar to those in western industrialized nations than are found in traditional Filipino society. Most of the respondents particularly if they were health workers tended to advocate such practices for their clients. Thus 65 thought fruit juice should be started at the age of 1 month, 24 of the health personnel (but only 5 of the others) recommended giving lugaw before 3 moths of age and 47 of all respondents think breastfeeding should cease before the 1st birthday (30 , most of them midwives and nurses, would stop before 9 months).</subfield>
