<subfield code="a">The continuing increase of the old age population causes an alarm to society, especially in the healthcare service system. It becomes a challenge to the healthcare team, particularly the nurses, to create a more innovative way of caring for the age group. Health education is one of the primary tasks of nurses that will enable older persons to improve and maintain their health. With this also comes the knowledge to prevent further deterioration of their health brought about by the aging process or an experience from an existing disease condition. The home as the setting of healthcare is now considered the choice because of its praticality and accessibility. It is this particular concern that this study focuses on the effect of home-based health education program to the self-care abilities of older persons.{{{{Self-care abilities of older persons will be studied using two main variables, the knowledge level and the physical functional status. Included in the parameters used to measure the physical functional status of the participants are walking exercise, the activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living and their relation to joint pain. With the implementation of home-based health education program, participants are expected to have increased knowledge and consequently, they would have developed maximum capability in performing their physical functional activities. Overall, it is expected that the participants will attain optimum capability in caring for themselves.{{{{A one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with non-probability sampling was used in this study. With the present inclusion criteria and the participants's willingness to join the study, 32 older persons became eligible as study population. Home-based health education program, the sole intervention in this study, utilized an academically designed written package, Home Health Guide for Well Older Persons. This provided scientific informaton and concepts to primarily improve both the cognitive and the physical aspects of the older persons. Evaluation tools used were the self-rate checklist form for the knowledge variable and a self-report evaluation tool for physical functional status variable. Evaluation was done before and after the implementation of the intervention. ...</subfield>
