TY - THES T1 - "Prepare me" interventions and the quality of life of advanced progressive cancer patients A1 - Abaquin, Carmencita M. UL - https://tuklas.up.edu.ph/Record/UP-1685523046125441336 AB - BACKGROUND: During the past two decades, the incidence of cancer has significantly increased not only in the Philippines but also worldwide. Cancer has been associated with multi-faceted issues and concerns regardless of stage of development. For patients with advanced progressive cancer these problems become more compounded, thus the need to develop interventions that can address their needs especially those concerning their ability to be in control and maintaining their dignity. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study is to determine the effects of a holistic nursing intervention called "Prepare Me" for patients with advanced progressive cancer. Specific objective include: (1) to describe the socio-demographic profiles of patients with advanced progressive cancer; (2) to identify the current physical, psychological and spiritual concerns of adult patients with advanced progressive cancer; (3) to determine the difference in the QOL of patients before and after "Prepare Me" nursing interventions; (4) to determine the efficacy of "Prepare Me" nursing interventions in improving quality of life among patients with advanced progressive cancer; (5) to determine factors that will facilitated the attainment of patient's quality of life. SAMPLE: Included in this study were adult with advanced progressive cancer confined at the Cancer Institute, Wards 1,2,3,4 and 14-B of PGH regardless of diagnosis and sex, who met the following inclusion criteria: conscious and alert, aware of diagnosis, ability to participate, who consented to be included in this study, without difficulty in communicating and who did not have any of the following tubes (endotracheal, tracheostomy, and chest tubes). METHODOLOGY: The study utilized a quasi-experimental Randomized Block, Split-Plot Factorial design. The three characteristics of an experimental study namely: control, randomization and manipulation were observed in this study. This study was done in two phases. The first phase was descriptive correlational and the second phase was a quasi-experimental design using Randomized Block (RB) Split-Plot Factorial design. All respondents were interviewed using an interview schedule to determine their problems/concerns and quality of life. Because of situational limitations it was not possible to randomize the sample to control and study group. But randomization of areas for study and control group was done. The control group received the usual nursing care given in the ward and the Nurse presence intervention. The study group received "Prepare Me" nursing interventions which consisted of Nurse Presence, Values, Clarification, Reminiscence Therapy, Breathing Relaxation and Meditation with or without Music. These interventions were randomized for each subject. This method strengthened the statistical analysis of the data. Psychophysiologic responses were monitored before and after each intervention. Quality of life determination was done on the fourth day and prior to discharge or thre to four days QOL 2. DATA ANALYSIS: The following statistical treatments were used in this study: (1) for the sociodemographic characteristics, symptom occurrence and relief, and quality of life scores the monovariate of means, frequency distribution, Standard Deviation were used; (2) for correlation, the Pearson r Product Moment was used and the two groups-control and study, were tested through the T-test; (3) for the intervention effects, the Randomized Block and Split-Plot Factorial design was utilized; (4) multiple regression, specifically the stepwise and backward regression analysis was utilized for the determination of significant variables, all an alpha level of .05. RESULTS: The following sociodemographic variables were considered in this study: age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, occupation, family income, religion, and type of support system.
