   <subfield code="a">32 Salmonella sp. belonging to Groups B, D, E3 and E4 that were resistant to the actions of from 3 to 5 antibiotics such as ampicillin, kanamycin, gentamicin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline were used as donors in the transfer of multiple drug resistance during conjugation with antibiotic-sensitive Escherichia coli acting as the recipient. In all cases, transfer of multiple drug resistance was effected. However, the levels of drug resistance expressed by the recipient were either lower (50 of those studied) or equal (the remaining 50 ) to those of the donors. Transfers were both complete and partial. In all cases, more than 1 resistance marker were transmitted to the recipient. Treatment of donors suspected of carrying the R factor plasmid with acriflavine hydrochloride resulted in elimination of curing rates ranging from 4 to 10 for total curing and up to 62 for curing of resistance to only 1 drug. Spontaneous loss of multiple drug resistance after 1 year of storage at 4(degree centigrade) was observed among the donors. The results of this study definitely show that the multiple drug resistance carried by Salmonella isolates were transferable and curable by acriflavine hydrochloride. These findings were taken to mean that the multiple drug resistance carried by the Salmonella isolates were plasmid-mediated.</subfield>
