<subfield code="a">15 0-7 day-old infants with normal gestational age, birthweight of 2.275 kg and higher, delivered normally (vaginal, spontaneous) and living in the San Andres area were followed up until 4 months of age to study in-depth infant feeding and growth patterns. Dietary intake data were collected weekly using the 24-hour recall method and evaluated using Food Composition Tables and the Tables of Recommended Dietary Allowances. Cow's milk intake was computed from the dilution, frequency of feeding and the amount consumed per feeding. Breastmilk intake was computed using the method outlined by Magbitang. Weight was measured every 2 weeks and length measure was taken monthly. The weight and length data were plotted on growth charts and were compared with a local standard. Morbidity and relevant socioeconomic data were collected and analyzed. 33 of the subjects were breast-fed, 27 were purely bottle fed and 40 mixed fed. The growth pattern of the subjects showed the characteristic rapid growth at infancy with 60 doubling their weight at four months of age. Comparison of weight data with the standards of Baltazar et al showed that the subjects were lighter at birth. From 1-4 months, however, the weights of 100 of the breast-fed, 25 of the bottle-fed babies and 50 of the mixed-fed babies were 92 of standard or higher. Use of the growth chart revealed 100 of the breast-fed shifted from a lower to a higher percentile position While only 25 of the bottle-fed and 33 of the mixed-fed performed equally well. Statistically, the type of feeding was found to be correlated with weight but not with lenght. The diets of the nursing mothers were inadequate in all nutrients considered--energy, protein, iron and vitamin A. The energy intake of the mothers was correlated with per capita expenditure for food but not with the weight increments of their infants. The diets of all the infants were inadequate in energy and protein. At 4 months of age, only 20 were given semi-solid or solid supplements. The correlation between energy intake of the infants with their weight gain was not significant. However, a more extensive study with a use of more sophisticated and sensitive procedures was recommended to fully understand the relationship between the 2 variables.</subfield>
