   <subfield code="a">In order to determine whether a videotape material containing messages on the transmission and prevention of schistosomiasis is effective in reducing unsafe water contact behaviour and in increasing knowledge of school children on schistosomiasis in China, a quasi-experimental study was undertaken among 2,263 primary school children in 50 schools in the Dongting lake region, an area in China endemic for schistosomiasis.Findings based on results of pre-intervention and post-intervention answers to self-administered questionnaires and observation of water contact patterns showed a significant increase in knowledge about schistosomiasis and decrease in water contact patterns with unsage sites of transmission, with no difference in frequency of water contact behavior.</subfield>
