<subfield code="a">This study conducted at the Philippine General Hospita Department of Emergency Medical Services, sought to identify the knowledge level as well as health care behavior of asthmatic patients. An asthma self-care package was constructed for this type of patients. Hence the study also sought to determine the effect of this self-care package on their cognitive level about asthma and to note down the pattern of the frequency and severity of asthmatic attacks. The asthma self-care package aimed to increase their knowledge about asthma's nature, dynamics and what to avoid in order not to trigger asthma attacks. Correspondingly with an increase in knowledge, the frequency and severity of asthma attacks would go down.A sample size of fifty patients meeting the inclusion criteria became participants of this study. Through randomization, 25 were in the study group, the group who was given the asthma self-care packages and the other 25 were in the control group. Both groups were given the pretest. Questions in the pretest were items assessing their cognitive level about asthma on asthma's nature, dynamics, triggers and controllers. The pretest also assessed the patients' health care behavior, in relation to preventive and promotive aspects of asthma care. The study utilized both the descriptive and quasi-experimental designs with pre and post test features. As stated earlier the 50 participants were randomly distributed to comprise the study group and the control group. To compare the two groups' outcome as measured by the pre and post test scores for both the cognitive and behavioral aspects, the paired T-test preset at p.05 level of confidence was used. The study made use also of correlational tests to see the relationship of the variables with the outcome. The problems that guided the direction of this study were:1. How much do patients coming to the PGH Department of Emergency Medical Services know about asthma?2. Will an asthma care package increase the patients' knowledge and consequential health care behavior toward asthma care?3. Will an asthma self-care package reduce the recurrence and severity of asthma attacks?</subfield>

<subfield code="a">These problem questions became the basis of the hypothesis formulation aiming at the favorable effect of the asthma self-care package on the patients' cognitive level about asthma. Likewise, the effect would also reduce the frequency of asthma attack recurrence. Severity of those attacks would also be lessened. The patients had follow-up visits two weeks and even four weeks after their initial visit at the hospital. Results showed that the asthma self-care package was effective on the study group at a p.05 level of significance. This was analyzed using the paired T-test comparing the pre and post test scores of the study group and the control group. The control group did not differ in their pre and post test scores on the three dimensions of knowledge, behavior and number of asthmatic attack per week.Based on the results of the study, it clearly pointed out that nurses have significant roles in improving the well being of asthmatic patients through education and explanation about asthma such as the one in the package. They should utilize their teaching function to promote wellness among patients.Hospital administrators, those in training and research could encourage the nursing staff to construct similar self-care package for other ailments and conditions such as for diabetes, for hypertension for infections diseases and others. This form of instruction-health-teaching packaging is effective especially for adult patients. The study was documented through this research that people with asthma can live maximally with quality if they are knowledgeable about asthma; its nature, dynamics, signs, treatment, triggers and controllers. The study has also validated the effectiveness of self-care package to enhance wellness among individuals with asthma.</subfield>
