<subfield code="a">The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of Cacao Bean Husk (CBH) Extract in controlling dental plaque formation. An in-vivo study utilizing mouth rinse as its study test together with the Placebo mouth rinse (negative control ) and 20% dilution AOS Gold mouth rinse (positive control) was administered to forty-five (45) volunteers undergoing orthodontic treatment whose age ranges from 22 to 44 years old with an overall mean age of 32.0 years old. They were evaluated at baseline and at four (4) day plaque regrowth experimental study was done by allowing the participants to gargle with the assigned mouth rinse, as their only means of oral hygiene practice. The plaque index scoring was obtained through Turesky-Gimore-Glickmann Modification of Quigley and Hein Plaque Index. Results obtained revealed that the use of CBH Extract mouth rinse presented a significant decrease in the reduction of dental plaque formation to forty subjects (88.9%) while, AOS Gold group showed that forty-nine (91.1%) had a significant reduction in dental plaque accumulation. In contrast, all the patients under the Placebo mouth rinse oral hygiene routine revealed a remarkable increase in dental accumulation in all the forty-five (45) participating volunteers, indicative that there was no significant reduction in the dental plaque formation. Comparison of the mouth rinses after the four (4) day treatment period showed statistically significant difference in the Mean Plaque Index Scores among the three (3) study groups, (p<0.05) n favor or AOS Gold and CBH Extract. In conclusion, the outcome of the short-term clinical trial demonstrated that the order of effectivity and strength in reducing dental plaque formation was found to be greater in the AOS Gold mouth rise (positive control), closely followed by the CBH Extract mouth rinse (experimental/study group), and the least effective at inhibiting dental plaque was the Placebo mouth rinse (negative control). These can be explained by the proximate compositions present in CBH Extract as well as AOS Gold mouth rinse. Both mouth rinses comprise active ingredients in its performance as an anti-plaque agent especially among the orthodontic patients participating in the present study. The Placebo moth rinse on the other hand, had no active ingredients that can inhibit the formation of dental plaque.</subfield>
