   <subfield code="a">The ethereal extract of the leaves of Alstonia macrophylla Wall. (Fam. Apocynaceae) showed by thin layer chromatography the presence of five tertiary alkaloids and the absence of quaternary alkaloids. Of the alkaloids present, alkaloid x was isolated as white needle-like crystals, m.p. 210-212(degrees C) (dec.). Due to a very small yield of the isolated alkaloid (0.0005%), physicochemical methods were used in elucidating the possible structure. It did not correspond to any of the alkaloids previously isolated from Alstonia macrophylla Wall. It was found to be an indoline base with an ajamaline-sarpagine nucleus and containing one hydroxyl and one carbomethoxyl group. The molecular formula was established by mass spectrometry to be C21H24N2 03.</subfield>
