   <subfield code="a">The fresh leaves and young stems together with the young flowering tops of Ocinum basilicum Linn. (Fam. Labiatae) were extracted by steam distillation. It was found that the fresh and air-dried plant materials contain 0.42 and 1.20% volatile oil and 86.66 and 16.60% moisture, respectively. The physico-chemical properties of the oil from the fresh plant material were determined and the results were compared with those reported in the literature. The oil was subjected to fractional distillation under reduced pressure. Each 25 ml. of the oil gave two fractions. The oil and each fraction were studied for their constituents by using thin-layer chromatography, infrared spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The main constituent is methyl-chavicol. Preparation of the anisic acid by oxidation of methyl-chavicol was performed.</subfield>
