   <subfield code="a">Amebiasis continues to be epidemiological importance in developing countries.  At present, it has been established that amebiasis is caused by two distinct species, the pathogenic E. histolytica and non-pathogenic E. dispar.  Differentiation of these two species is of great clinical epidemiological importance.  An epidemiological study on Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar infection was conducted in 15 barangays of Sibulan, Negros Oriental.  Stool samples from human respondents were examined by formalin-ether concentration technique.  Those stool samples that were positive for protozoan parasites were subjected to PCR.  Subjects were also interviewed to gather factors that may be associated with the infection.  Stool samples from animals, which live in close proximity with the respondents were also examined for the presence of E. histolytica and E. dispar.  Out of 573 human stool samples, 50 (8.73%) were positive for E. histolytica / E. dispar using microscopy.  When polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was employed, 3 samples were infected with E. histolytica and 6 samples were infected with E. dispar.  Among the animal samples, 1 out of 482 (1.16%) was infected with E. histolytica/E. dispar using microscopy.  But none was infected with either E. histolytica or E. dispar by PCR.  Looking into the sociodemographic, socioeconomic and environmental factors which may determine the prevalence and distribution of amebiasis by FECT, this study showed that age, educational attainment and source of water supply were associated with E. histolytica/E. dispar infection using Chi square test at 5% level of significance.  Identification of the specific factors which significantly contribute to E. histolytica transmission will lead to effective monitoring and treament of cases, prevention of infection, improved health services and successful amebiasis control.</subfield>
