Thesis (Master of Science in Dentistry)--University of the Philippines Manila The aim of the present study was to determine the cranio-facial structures of the Nepalese adults. The materials comprised of 100 lateral cephalograms of the Nepalese adults of ages ranging from 17 to 30 years. The standardized lateral films were assessed using Down's and Tweed's analyses. Ten cranio-facial measurements of the Down's analysis and three cranio-facial measurements of the Tweed's analysis were recorded and analyzed on each cephalogram. The results from these methods were compared with the Caucasian norms established by Downs and Tweed. No statistically significant difference between the Nepalese males and females were observed in both skeletal and dental parameters, except for the lower incisor to occlusal plane. The Nepalese males exhibited significantly protrusive lower incisors than the Nepalese females. The mean value of the angle of convexity of the combined Nepalese adults indicated more protrusive maxilla than the Caucasians, although it was not statistically significant. All the dental measurements of the Downs' analysis in the Nepalese samples were significantly different from the Caucasian norms. Nepalese group demonstrated significant dental protrusions as compared to the Caucasians. When comparisons were made among the different ethnic groups, Nepalese group presented the most prominent chin, flattest occlusal plane and forward direction of growth pattern. Nepalese group tend to have retrognathic profile in contrast to the flatter profile of the Caucasians and Indians due to a more protrusive maxilla. They exhibited prognathic profile as compared to the Japanese and Chinese. The dental parameters showed that the Nepalese group is protrusive than Caucasians but retrusive than Indians, Japanese and Chinese. Tweed's values were also significantly different between the Nepalese and the Caucasians. The mean values for the Nepalese groups were within the range of Tweed's reference values.
