   <subfield code="a">Calamus ornatus BLUME var, philippinensis (Arecaceae) Is a climbing palm usually found in the primary forest at low and medium attitudes. It is widely distributed but endemic to the Philippines. Its shoot has been consumed as food and medicine to the Kanawan Aytas, an indigenous people living in Morong, Bataan, Philippines. It is the objective of this study to determine the efficacy of this food as antimotility agent as well as its nutrient composition. Dried shoot was extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The methanol extract was fractionated yielding fractions rich in spirostanol saponins.It was evaluated for antimotility activity using the charcoal tracing method in 60 Swiss mice. Proximate analysis revealed its food composition as 1.40g% protein, 8.62g% carbohydrate, 1.37% fat and 0.82% ash, 38.59mg% Ca, 65.91 mg% P, 0.79mg% Fe, 54.48mg% K, and 10.10mg% Vitamin C. the LD50 was 2.46g/kg bodyweight. The in vivo bioassay of this fraction revealed that the three doses (low= 0.6 g/kbw, medium=0.95 g/kbw and high=1.5 g/kbw) used exhibited highly significant potency (P&gt;0.004, P&gt;0.002, and P&gt;0.001, respectively) against castor oil induced diarrhea in mice. In conclusion, Calamus ornatus shoot may be considered a potential functional food rendering health benefits particularly as antimotility agent. This is the first report on the nutrient composition and antimotility activity of Calamus orantus shoot. The results of this study may render a big help to the Kanawan Aytas not only in terms of health benefit they may derive from eating Calamus oranatus shoot, but also in their future economic standing.</subfield>
