   <subfield code="a">Treatment of head and neck cancer has considerable impact on food intake and dependence on tube feeding due to chronic dysphagia. Therefore the association of swallowing therapy (SPT) with swallowing ability, nutritional status (weight loss 5% per month) and food intake (quality and quantity) of head and neck cancer patients was studied at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre. Six out of 32 patients had swallowing therapy at least once from baseline to two month after treatment. Swallowing therapy was not significantly associated with swallowing ability but was associated with weight loss (p=0.03). All food groups of the Dutch dietary guideline were present but the intakes in the quantity of food groups were deficient for all patients. Their oral energy intake was higher compared to their counterparts at both baseline (SPT= 13132 kJ ± 2261; non-SPT=9772 kJ ± 4275) and end of treatment (SPT=9360 kJ ± 2139; non-SPT=5643 kJ ± 4726) (not significant). Among the four outcome variables nutritional status was significantly associated with swallowing therapy. Swallowing therapy can help increase oral energy intake. Hence, may have an important role in the reinstitution of oral feeding.</subfield>
