This made Iloilo a thriving commercial center, and according to The Tribune, the Iloilo/Negros region had been "the center of the greatest commercial activity for the last twelve years, accounting for about 60 percent of total government revenues." These circumstances made the Negros sugar barons among the richest men in the country, and among them were the Lopezes who would go on to create what was the first true commercial airline in the country.
