   <subfield code="a">The study was conducted to test, describe and assess the written English proficiency of selected UPLB freshmen in certain English areas. A total of 140 students from three (3) sections of English 1 lecture classes (totaling 504) were requested to participate in the study which employed a modified proficiency test from standardized tests of the English Division in UPLB and survey questionnaire. The study revealed the following: selected freshmen of UPLB all the entry level had a FAiR proficiency in the areas of grammar, vocabulary, sentence  construction, and paragraph writing had a GOOD proficiency in reading in reading comprehension. At the end of their English course, in both the lecture and recitation classes, the same students had a proficiency of FAIR in grammar and paragraph writing. POOR in vocabulary and sentence construction; and GOOD in reading comprehension. The overall proficiency of the student in their lecture and recitation classes at the end of their English course were both rated as FAIR; while their general proficiency at the end of the English course was also FAIR. An enhancement scheme is recommendedfor the handling of ENG 1 course as a result of the study.</subfield>
